Electric Scooter Wheels

As many people change to more environmentally sound transportation like electric scooters, the market for aftermarket products like new electric scooter wheels grows as well. Some people are looking for a new wheel to serve as a spare or to replace a wheel that was damaged or lost. Other people are placing their wheels with new ones for higher performance or even stylistic and aesthetic reasons.

When adding a new electric scooter wheel to your vehicle, it’s critical that you buy one of the right size and specs or otherwise it may not fit correctly or may be making your scooter more dangerous. You can usually find the specs for the relevant wheels in the manual that came with your scooter, or you can ask the shop that sold you the scooter for their advice.

It’s important to be very careful when replacing the wheels on your scooter. The wheels are obvious an important piece that separate you from the road and other cars, and it’s critical that they are installed correctly. While you can probably follow instructions in the manual or found online, it’s a wise idea to consult a professional if you are unsure what you are doing. New stylish electric scooter wheels are not important enough to risk injury or even death if you put them on the scooter incorrectly! A professional can make sure that the job is done right and give you tips on doing it yourself next time. If you plan to change tires in the case of a puncture, it can be a good idea to practice at home first too.

Touch Screen Technology – How Does it Work?

Touch Screen Technology has been slowly becoming more main-stream with the roll out of several new smart phones and computer monitors. No mouse is required, no trackball, and no arrow buttons either. With the touch of your finger, you can launch applications, make a phone call, draw a picture, and more! It makes becoming mobile even easier, plus when it comes to smart phones, the screen is larger for better viewing. But how does touch screen technology work?

Touch Screens are able to operate using your hand, finger, or a stylus pen.

There are several different kinds of touch screens:

· Resistive (pressure-sensitive)

· Capacitive (electrically-sensitive)

· SAW (aka surface acoustic wave, or acoustically sensitive)

· Infrared (photo-sensitive)

Resistive touchscreen panels are composed of several very thin layers, including two thin metallic layers that are electrically conductive and separated by a narrow gap. When there is pressure applied to those layers, the metallic layers become connected. This causes a change in electrical current. This registers as a touch event which will then show as a cursor movement or the selection of an icon or application.

SAW technology uses ultrasonic waves that pass over a touchscreen panel. As the panel is touched, part of the wave is absorbed. This registers as a touch event due to the change in the waves themselves.

Capacitive touch screen panels consist of an insulator coated with a transparent conductor. By the human body touching this conductor, it distorts the electrostatic field of the body and determines the location of the touch.

Infrared touchscreen technology uses infrared LED and photo-detectors around the edge of a screen. When a stylus, finger, or other object interrupts the flow of these LEDs and photo-detectors, it creates a touch event.

The touch screen technology can be more complex than this simple explanation; however the method of using touchscreens is very easy and even fun!

Brother, Can You Wait For a Charge?

One of the biggest dilemmas posed by an electric car or plug-in hybrid is range, followed quickly by “How the heck do I recharge this?”

The Nissan Leaf has a range of about 100 miles, the Chevy Volt about 40. The Volt can cruise farther using its tiny gas motor to produce energy for the electric drive.

So for somebody like me who has either hitchhiked or broken down far too many times to ever want to be stranded on a highway again, the Volt would be the only choice. Freedom is important.

But this just in from the Bay Area Air Quality Management Division: “$5 million for electric vehicles recharging stations.”

Cool. Drop in the bucket, but you’ve got to start somewhere.

The Bay Area Air District says it will help establish a network of “accessible charging sites where electric vehicle owners can conveniently recharge while conducting their normal business, running errands or shopping.” The money will pay for grants that include 3,000 home chargers at single family and multi-family homes, 2,000 public chargers at businesses and high-density parking areas and 50 fast chargers close to highways.

“The past several years have seen exciting progress in the development of electric vehicle technology,” said Air District Executive Officer Jack P. Broadbent, in the statement. “Creating a useful charging network will make it easier for Bay Area residents to Spare the Air every day by going electric.”

Gas2.org’s Christopher DeMorro called fast charging “a real game changer” in a post about another company rolling out fast chargers this quarter. A conventional trickle charge takes about eight hours.

Still, I’m not convinced this electric thing will work. Say I’m on the Grapevine dangerously low on power. I pull into a charging station, twiddle my thumbs waiting for an outlet with the other green traveling yahoos, then plug in. Say it takes 15 to 30 minutes for a fast charge. That adds maybe an hour to your Fresno-L.A. commute, after all is said and done. Sort of like catching traffic on the 405.

Scooters Provide Fun and Mobility

As a parent, one might find scooters a pain in the backside as you walk down the sidewalk with kids on them making you feel like you need to head for a bunker or at least jump off the sidewalk to safety.

Some of us would even put them into the same category as all those annoying skateboards before so many skateboard parks were provided. But to those who aren’t yet parents or who may now be grandparents or even great grandparents, scooters provide a whole different outlook.

To both age groups, these transportation devices do provide one aspect both can appreciate. That is the sense of freedom. They get you where you want to go.

Kids’ scooters can be so much cooler than having a bike. Definitely cooler to have a three wheel one than a tricycle if you are in the three to five age group. Not only do they seem cooler, they come in such great colors and sport different characters this age group love like Dora and Spiderman.

As the kids get older, these wheeled devices become more capable of allowing them to go further and do more. These wheeled adventures will allow heavier payloads (meaning kids can keep using them as they grow up and get bigger) and go further distances on one charge. Some are actually gas powered which will allow a larger range from home.

The electric and gas powered ones will let the kids go faster as well. For instance the Razor E100 electric scooter will get up to 10 mph and allow travel for up to 40 minutes on one charge. So you can see why kids would love these wheels.

But what about those who have problems getting around? Well, mobility scooters fill the ticket there. They allow those with various disabilities the opportunity to leave home even if they can’t stand very long.

Just think of having leg problems or arthritis in your knees so bad that you can’t stand longer than maybe 10 minutes at a time. Sure would cut down on your opportunities to cruise the mall or just get outside in the fresh air. Taking a walk around the neighborhood would be impossible.

But if you have a medical scooter or streamlined travel scooter, you now have the ability to get out into the world. You have no idea just how much that can affect your life when you have physical ailments that otherwise would restrict you to your own home.

How to Buy a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

Setting out to buy a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) can be a daunting experience with the wide variety of vehicles available on the market. Here are a few helpful tips to make the search that bit easier.

What is a WAV?

WAVs are adapted vehicles which are specially converted to allow you to travel in or drive whilst remaining in your wheelchair. WAV features can include a wheelchair ramp, lowered floor to assist entry, special wheelchair occupant seatbelts, wheelchair restraints and driving adaptations.

WAVs are popular as they are not only affordable but are available in a range of sizes and designs so you can be assured of finding a WAV that is just right for you.

Is a WAV for you?

Many wheelchair users prefer WAVs as they make travelling quick and easy and most importantly comfortable. Scooter users also increasingly choose WAVs because they can transport their scooter easily and safely while they transfer to a passenger seat.

Reasons for Choosing a WAV

With a WAV there’s no need for a wheelchair passenger to transfer to a passenger seat. Accessible features such as a lightweight wheelchair ramp make entry and exit quick, easy and completely hassle free. Lowering suspension and a lowered floor can be found in some WAVs which help to reduce the ramp gradient, positioning the ramp closer to the ground, further easing access.

All WAVs come with special wheelchair restraints and wheelchair passenger seatbelts providing complete safety and security for wheelchair passengers whilst they travel.

What’s more, with a variety of WAVs available, you can be sure to find the perfect car to meet your needs, such as accommodating all of the family or offering additional storage space for your equipment and luggage.

There are many different WAV seating layouts available for you to choose from. WAVs range from small cars accommodating driver, front passenger and rear wheelchair passenger to larger MPV accommodating driver, front passenger and 5 rear seated passengers and wheelchair passenger. Some MPVs even accommodate two wheelchair passengers. Many new conversions are designed to allow wheelchair passengers to sit next to, rather than behind, rear seated passengers which is more inclusive.

Some WAVs have new innovative wheelchair ramps that fold flat to the vehicle floor when the wheelchair passenger space is not in use, creating valuable storage space for shopping trips and other bulky items.

For those who need additional head room, there are WAVs which feature a lowered floor or high roof to accommodate the taller wheelchair user.

Many WAVs come with optional aids to assist wheelchair user carers or partners during vehicle entry and exit. The electric winch, one such wheelchair aid, hooks onto the front frame of the wheelchair and guides the wheelchair into and out of the adapted vehicle, making it ideal for those who have trouble pushing the wheelchair passenger up the ramp.

An electric ramp assist is another helpful feature for those who struggle with lowering the wheelchair ramp. The electric ramp assist lowers the ramp to the floor ready for use.

Paying for your WAV

You can buy outright, rent or obtain a WAV through the Motability Scheme. Many wheelchair users choose, if eligible, to obtain a wheelchair accessible vehicle wheelchair accessible vehicle through the Motability Scheme. This means they allocate their monthly Mobility Allowance to Motability for the payment of their WAV.

Choosing your perfect WAV is all about finding the vehicle that meets your travelling needs. There are lots of options for you to choose from. Once you decide on the features that you need to travel comfortably, finding the right car should be easy. Simply make a list and use this to pick your perfect WAV.

Buying an Electric Scooter – Part 3

My recent trip to a local electric scooter dealership turned out to be quite educational for me. I’ve always been the type of person that wants to know all of the facts before plunking down a large bit on my hard earned cash for any major purchase. I wanted to be certain that I understood exactly how a mobility scooter worked and how I would benefit from it.

My first set of questions to the dealer centered on how well the various electric scooters performed. I learned that there were many variables involved to determine the range and top speed that could be acquired with a scooter. I even learned that something as simple as tire pressure could make a huge difference in performance.

My next set of questions focused on the drive train specifications available for transportation scooters. The drive train is the part the makes actually the scooter go. In most cases, electric scooters are driven by a chain or belt drive system. The system consists of a chain-wheel sprocket that is mounted on the motor, along with another sprocket that is mounted on the real wheel. As the motor spins, it moves the chain or belt, which in-turn causes the wheel to rotate. In some rare cases, the drive-train system may even be direct drive. This means that the motor is actually attached to, or in contact with, the rear wheel. The speed of the motor is controlled with a hand throttle or thumb controller.

The braking system for an electric scooter will also vary with each different brand and model. Most of the high-end models are usually equipped with some variation of a disc brake system. However, the other types available include calipers, drum brakes, and hub brakes. In most cases, a new scooter will include both front and rear brakes. However, you should double-check this before you make your purchase. Some models may even include an automatic throttle shut-off safety system. This is a feature that stops the engine from becoming engaged while the brakes are being applied.

One thing that surprised me and really caught my attention at the dealership I visited — there were some items listed as an option for several of the scooters that I felt should be included and considered as basic components. It would definitely be in your best interest to double-check this before you make your purchase and then get surprised with extra, hidden costs. Here is a list of some of the other features and accessories you insure are included when looking for an electric scooter; key ignition, speed indicator gauge, battery indicator gauge, cargo box, adjustable seat, adjustable handlebars, reflectors, turn signals, brake lights, horn, and tool kit.

Buying an Electric Scooter – Part 4

If you have followed my articles so far, I hope this trip has been informative for you. More importantly, I hope they have helped you to understand and select the best scooter possible for your budget. My goal is to save you some exploration time and learn from my experience. In this issue we will explore details surrounding the electrical system of a typical electric mobility scooter.

The charging system on an electric scooter is made up of a battery and some sort of plug-in A/C adapter. The purpose of the adapter is simply to convert alternating current (A/C power) into direct current (D/C power) so that it can be used to charge the battery for your scooter. Most of these adapters have some sort of “smart” design that allows for a rapid battery charge, along with an “automatic off” feature that powers the unit off when the battery reaches its full capacity. You should try to avoid any charging units or electric scooters that do not include this feature. It is important that you understand that an over-charged condition could cause permanent damage to your scooter battery.

Most electric scooters run on a single sealed 12-volt rechargeable lead acid battery. However, depending on the brand and model, some scooters may have anywhere from one to three of these batteries installed. The power and quality rating of your scooter battery is crucial to the range of the scooter. In addition, low tire pressure, extreme temperatures, rough terrain, hills, high levels of speed, and the weight of the rider will put extra demand on the battery and drain its power much faster.

The average life span of a typical scooter battery is usually between 250 – 500 charges, but this can vary depending upon the brand and quality of the battery installed. A completely drained battery can take anywhere from two to eight hours to fully recharge — but again, this will depend on the brand and quality of the electric scooter, along with the quality of the charging unit being used. Some electric scooter models may also offer a quick change battery option that allows for you to swap out your depleted batteries for a fresh set whenever necessary. It is recommended that you always try to keep your lead acid batteries fully charged since they tend to have a much shorter life span if stored for a length of time in a depleted condition. For longer battery life, always remember to charge your electric scooter’s battery immediately after riding it.

Knowing how to properly care for your scooter and its electrical system can greatly improve the performance and life span of your electric mobility scooter. Keeping this system in a clean and fully charged state will provide many years of comfort in knowing that your scooter is ready to go whenever needed. Most importantly, you can have the confidence and peace of mind in knowing that it will not leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere at an inopportune time. Take care of your scooter and it will take care of you!
